Chapter 41

Ellen reached the camp alive, but a god had marked her dead. Dr. Manhattan had run every path from her choices and found her women slaughtered at the end of each one. He blamed one act she would commit. She did not know what it was. She rode the salt wagon home before dawn, sick with the not-knowing. A blind step could damn her. So could standing still. She had to face him and learn the shape of the thing. He was already at the hotel when she returned. Dr. Manhattan stood on the open road where the crater used to be, blue and calm, waiting like a fixed point. Her women watched from the high windows. Cade stood in the lobby door, rifle low, counting the exits out of habit. None of them mattered. You could not shoot a man who saw the bullet before you loaded it. "Tell me the act," Ellen said. "The one that kills them. I'll never do it." "Knowing changes nothing," Dr. Manhattan said. "You warn them. You hide the ledger. Each path ends the same. The cause is not one act. It is you. You gather cast-out women into one place. That place draws every hunter on this plain. In four hundred branches, the crowd of them arrives together and burns you out." Ellen understood then. He had not seen a mistake. He had seen her whole plan. The haven itself was the crime. "Then you've counted wrong," she said. "You counted us in one place. We won't stay in one place." Dr. Manhattan tilted his head. For the first time his white eyes narrowed. "Explain." "You said the hunters arrive together because we're a fixed target. A wall to break." She pointed at the salt beds past the wash. "We stop being a wall. We move across the flats. Small groups, no home for them to burn. You saw a fort. I'm giving up the fort." The god went still. Ellen watched him run it, path after path, faster than she could breathe. Cade did not move. A woman's rifle barrel dipped in the window. "The branch splits," Dr. Manhattan said at last. "Scattered, you lose the walls. But the death I saw does not come. It becomes uncertain. I cannot see the end." He said it like a man reporting weather. "You have removed the outcome I marked you for." "So the marker's off," Ellen said. "There is no longer a fixed death to prevent." He looked at the hotel, then at the salt. "I have no reason to end you. I have others to attend." He was gone between one blink and the next. The road lay empty. Ellen stood in the wind with her women safe above her. She had bought their lives by giving up the only wall she had. Now she owned a fortress she could not keep, and a plan to abandon it, and no idea where on the open salt they would go next.
