Chapter 5

The matchstick man was gone, but Ellen knew he would come back. He had seen fleeing shapes and an empty barn. That was enough for now. But Vincent's men were careful. Sooner or later one of them would walk these stalls and find no sign of a real fight. No blood, no dropped bundles, no broken boards. Just clean straw and a story too smooth to trust. If they reported that, her water stopped and Vincent's protection ended. So Ellen made the fight real. She kicked the pitchfork across the floor and left it. She tore a strip from a woman's forgotten blanket and hung it on a nail, ripped. She dragged a crate over and cracked its side against a post. She smeared dirt where feet would have scuffed running. Her hands shook, but she worked fast. A shadow filled the doorway. Vincent Marconi stepped in, pinstripe suit dark against the morning glare. He did not look at the mess she had staged. He looked at her. "You cleared it," he said. "They ran," Ellen said. "Your man saw." Vincent walked one slow circle through the barn. He touched the ripped blanket. He nudged the cracked crate with a polished shoe. He had a gift for reading people, and Ellen felt him reading her now, five minutes stretching thin. "Six women," he said. "No blood." "I didn't have to cut them. Just scare them." He stopped in front of her. His eyes moved over her face, her hands, the sweat on her neck. She held still. She thought of the women loose in the brush and made herself believe her own lie. "You did the job," Vincent said at last. "Water keeps flowing." He turned for the door. "They come back, you tell me. Not fix it yourself." Ellen breathed. She had passed. Then Vincent stopped in the doorway. "One thing." He did not turn around. "A man was in here. Coat. Hat. My men counted his tracks going out the back with your six." Now he looked over his shoulder. "You didn't scare him. You worked with him." The barn went cold. Ellen said nothing. "I know that man," Vincent said. "He's hunting people I need alive. His work ends mine." He faced her fully. "You want your water? You find where he went. You tell me. That's the new debt." He walked out into the light. Ellen stood alone in the ruined barn. She had kept the water and kept the women. But Vincent had not been fooled about Cade. Now he owned her again, and this time the price was the one man who had helped her. Out in the brush the women were running, Cade among them, and a giant scorpion's tracks crossed the same dirt. She had bought one day and sold the next.
