Chapter 18

Elsa climbed out of the cellar with the lantern still warm in her hand and a new worry sharper than the wall. Brynn was walking the lanes again. Elsa had heard it at the well yesterday and again from Nora at first light. Brynn was telling neighbors that Elsa had taken a child into the dark, that Elsa had chosen a regent nobody trusted, that the elder's judgment had slipped with her age. If the elders believed her, Jasper's regency would fall, and Bodhi's path with it. Elsa needed the village to stop listening. She sent word through Nora for Fern to come to the meeting hut before the morning bell. Then she walked home and opened the door for the pale wolf. The animal padded in and sat by the hearth, blue eyes steady on her. Elsa spoke Brynn's name aloud and watched. The wolf's ears did not soften. Its tail did not move. The same still watchfulness it had shown for Jonas. That was enough. Her instinct had a witness now. Fern arrived at the Tidebark Hut with her crystal key still in her hand, strawberries bright on her dress. She had left Bodhi at his letters under a neighbor's eye. "You said it was urgent." Elsa closed the driftwood door behind her and gestured to the vine-woven table where the bottles and herbs sat. "Sit. I need the village on my side by nightfall, and I cannot do it alone." Elsa told her plainly. Brynn had groomed Bodhi first. Brynn had been in the cellar. Brynn was now walking door to door, smiling, planting doubt about Jasper and about Elsa herself. "She wants the boy back. If the elders pull the regency, she has him inside a week." Fern's jaw tightened. "What do you need from me?" "You are the teacher. Parents believe you before they believe me. Go to each elder's wife today. Tell them Bodhi is safe in your schoolhouse learning his letters. Tell them Brynn was seen leaving berries at the boy's door before I ever intervened." Fern nodded once. "I will." Then Elsa sent Nora for Wren. The porcelain-faced child came in her stiff white dress, button eyes fixed on nothing and everything. Elsa knelt to her level. "You sat at my table when I feared the baker. I need you to sit at another table today. Brynn's. Take the long way. Let her see you on her step." Wren said nothing. Wren never did. She turned and walked out into the lane. By dusk the story had shifted. Two elders' wives stopped Elsa on the path to thank Fern for the boy's lessons. A third asked, quietly, why Brynn kept a child with sewn eyes on her doorstep all afternoon. Brynn stayed inside her library that night. She did not knock on any more doors. The whispering stopped. Bodhi's path held.
