Chapter 2

Morning came gray and slow. Elsa Crane laid out four honey-cakes on the vine-woven table and set the kettle on the hearth. Four cakes, four candidates, one long day of tea. Somewhere in the ledger under Nora Lund's arm, a fresh cross sat next to one of their names. Elsa did not yet know which. Nora came in from the yard with mud on her waders and the leather book pressed to her chest. She set the ledger on the table between the potion bottles. Her thumb marked the page. "When," Elsa said. "Before I woke. My hand wrote it in the dark." Nora opened the book. One of the four names had a small black cross beside it. The ink had smudged where her sleeve had dragged. Elsa read the name and did not let her face move. She had known the woman since the woman was a child. A weaver. Wide, warm smile. The kind of smile the village would follow into a snowbank. "You're certain the mark means what you said." "Every time so far." Elsa closed the ledger under her palm. "Then we don't wait for tea." She sent Nora out the back with instructions. Elsa herself walked to the weaver's door and invited her for a private word in the root cellar beneath the meeting hall. The weaver came smiling. Elsa smiled back the wide, unblinking smile the village trusted. The cellar stairs were narrow. Stone walls, old carved marks along the beams from a builder long dead. Elsa lit a lantern and set it on a barrel. She let the weaver walk ahead. "I'm choosing my successor," Elsa said. "I wanted you to hear it first." The weaver turned, delighted. Her hand was already in her apron pocket. When it came out, it held a short knife. "I hoped you would," the weaver said. Still smiling. "I've waited a long time to be told first." Elsa did not step back. She had placed Nora behind the cellar door for exactly this. The door swung. Nora struck once with the flat of a shovel. The weaver folded onto the stone. They stood over her together. The weaver was breathing. Nora set the shovel down and opened the ledger on the barrel beside the lantern. "Write it," Elsa said. "My hand already did." Nora turned the page. The cross beside the weaver's name had a circle drawn around it now, neat and closed. "That's new." Elsa looked at the ring around the cross and understood the ledger was answering her. It marked what she chose, not only what came. "Three left," she said. Outside, past the shuttered window, a pale wolf sat in the snow and watched the hut. Its blue eyes did not blink. Elsa met them through the glass and felt, for the first time, that the test was watching her back.
