Chapter 20

Elsa's second debt was paid, but the creature's warning still sat in her chest. She had barely finished her tea when Nora came through the door of the meeting hut without knocking. Nora set the ledger on the table and opened it to a fresh page. A mark had bloomed under a name Elsa knew well. Bodhi. A faint crossed shape, not clean, not hers. She stared at it. "When?" "Overnight," Nora said. "I did not write it. My hand did." Elsa's chest went cold. The mark was the creature's shape. The horned one had reached past her wards and set its claim on a child again. She pushed the ledger back. "He said future debts would come. He did not say he would choose the debtor." Nora closed the ledger and tucked it under her yellow slicker. "He is naming his own price now. If we do not answer by dark, he takes the boy." Elsa moved. She sent Nora to fetch Wren from the schoolhouse step, then walked to the blackberry arch alone. The little woven doorway sat under fresh snow, berries dark and heavy through the frost. Elsa knelt on the plank and spoke into the hollow the way the librarian once had. "I need the one who lived here. I need the wind that speaks." The berries shivered. A pale blue shape gathered under the arch, thin as breath, eyes like two lit thumbprints. "You paid," the ghost said, voice sliding between the vines. "He is asking again." "Whose name is on the ledger?" Elsa said. "A child's," the ghost said. "The mark is not for the child. It is for the one who owes him a life and hides behind the child's door." Elsa's breath caught. Fern. Fern had sheltered Bodhi. Fern had opened her crystal door to him. The creature had counted her as a party to the debt. Nora arrived with Wren at her side. The button-eyed girl stood very still on the snow, dress stiff, small hands folded. Elsa crouched to her level. "You sat on the librarian's step for me. I need one more sitting. On the schoolhouse threshold. All night. Do not let him past you." Wren tilted her head. "He is bigger than me." "He respects the ones who do not blink," Elsa said. "You do not blink." Wren nodded once. Elsa walked to the fortress ruins before dusk with the stake in her sash. She held it up until he came. "The mark on the ledger is not the boy's," she said. "Name your true debtor. I will not lose the child or the teacher to a trick." The horned one smiled with wet teeth. "The teacher, then. At the next moon. Or the boy at this one." "The teacher," Elsa said, and the word cut her tongue. He turned into the trees. She had bought a month. She had sold Fern to buy it.
