Chapter 24

The morning after the wolf came, Elsa carried a plush caramel bear under her arm and walked to the cottage inside the strawberry tree. The teal crystal door threw a green shine on the snow. She knocked once. Fern opened it, blonde hair loose, her crystal key still on its cord at her neck. Clara was already inside at the table, apron on, kettle steaming. They had been waiting for her. Elsa set the bear on the table between them. The plush was soft and round, the color of warm bread. "He's been telling stories about people he doesn't know," Elsa said. "He borrows their names like coats. That's what the wolf smelled. That's what you saw, Clara. Stories won't fix it. He needs to sit with one villager long enough to actually remember them." Clara set down her cup. "I've been walking him through the lanes and feeding him facts. He memorizes them and gives them back. It looks like care from six feet away. Up close it's parroting." "Then stop feeding him facts," Elsa said. She pushed the bear toward Fern. "He carries this. He gives it to one child. Not for a story. To lend. The child brings it back after a week, and he asks about the week. Real questions. Real answers. He gets a real person out of it, not a rehearsal." Fern touched the bear's ear. "Whose child?" "The Peters baby's older sister," Clara said. "She's four. She's scared of the dark and she watches Bodhi from the doorway when he passes. Her mother trusts me. She'll say yes if I ask." "One child," Elsa said. "One bond. If he can make that one hold, the smile stops ringing hollow. The wives will feel it before they can name it." Fern lifted the bear into her lap. "And if he can't?" "Then we know inside a week, not a month," Clara said. "The mother will tell me. She tells me everything." Elsa nodded. "Give it to him today. Walk with him to the door. Then let him go in alone. No script from either of you. If he lies, the girl won't come back for the bear. That's our test." Clara wrapped the bear in a clean cloth. Fern turned the crystal key in the lock behind them as they stepped out into the cold. Elsa watched them go down the path, the wrapped bundle in Clara's arm, and felt the plan settle like a stone finding its seat. That evening Clara came back alone. Her face was tired but not grim. "She kept the bear," she said. "He sat on her floor for an hour. He asked her what she was scared of. He didn't invent anything. She told her mother she wants him to come back." Elsa let out a breath she had been holding for a week. One child. One name he would remember because he wanted to. It was a start she could build on.
