Chapter 29

The bread the mothers sent was still on the schoolhouse step at dawn. Elsa left it there and walked home through fresh snow. Her chest ached in the way it had ached all autumn, a slow pinch under the ribs. She had bought the boy a crown and a wolf and a household. She had not bought him the one thing he still lacked. If she died in her sleep tonight, no one alive would know how to read Nora's ledger, how to speak to the thing under the fortress, how to keep the whisper on the far side of the crystal door. Bodhi would sit on a chair he could not defend. She sent Fern a note before breakfast. Bring the boy. Bring Nora. Bring a book I can write in. They came at noon. Fern set a teal leather journal on the table, gold crest worn soft at the corners. "My grandmother's," she said. "She never filled it. I thought you might." Nora stood in her yellow slicker by the stove, ledger clutched to her chest like a child. Bodhi climbed onto the bench and set his chalk stub beside the journal. "I am going to teach you three things," Elsa told him. "You will not like any of them. You will learn them anyway." She opened the journal. She wrote the first name in the ledger she had ever chosen to kill. She wrote the price the horned thing had asked, and the price it had taken. She wrote what a circle meant, and what a cross meant, and what it meant when Nora's hand moved before dawn. Bodhi watched her pen. He did not interrupt. "Nora," Elsa said. "Show him your book. Let him hold it." Nora hesitated. Then she set the ledger in the boy's lap. Bodhi opened it carefully, the way Clara had taught him to hold a baby. He found his own name. He touched the circle around it. "That is me choosing you," Elsa said. "When I am gone, Fern will keep this journal. Nora will keep hers. You will not touch either alone until you are twelve. If Nora writes a name, you send for Fern. If the wall speaks, you stay behind the crystal. If the horned one calls a debt, you pay it in coin first, in kind second, and never in a child. Say it back." He said it back. Twice. The second time without prompting. Elsa signed the last page of the teal journal and slid it to Fern. "Regent's book," she said. "Jasper holds the seat. You hold this. He holds the crown until the boy is grown." Fern's hand closed around the crystal at her hip. "And you?" "I keep breathing," Elsa said, "until the ink is dry." That night Nora's hand moved before dawn. She wrote a name Elsa had not chosen. It was her own.
