Chapter 44

Clara came through the door of the driftwood hut before the kettle sang. She did not take off her shawl. She stood by the table and gripped the back of a chair until her knuckles paled. "There's a woman at the well," Clara said. "Sister to the man you marked. The wife-beater. She's asking who saw him last. She's asking whose child was crowned the week he vanished." Elsa set down the kettle. Six days left. If the sister reached Bodhi with those questions in her mouth, the crown on his head would rot before the village's eyes. "Who has she spoken to?" "Charlie Morrison. And Lynn. At the well this morning. Charlie went quiet. Lynn asked her mother what the woman meant." Clara's voice dropped. "Lynn doesn't know what her father did. Charlie never told her." Elsa touched the flower-crown at her temple and smoothed it. "Bring them here. Both. Before the sister circles back." Clara went. Elsa banked the fire and set out three cups. She thought of the scars along Charlie's forearms that no one in the village ever named aloud. They came within the hour. Charlie in her lavender jacket, hands tucked deep in the pockets. Lynn behind her in the pink floral shirt, brown eyes flicking from the low ceiling to the cups to Elsa's face. "Sit," Elsa said. She poured. She waited until Charlie's shoulders eased a fraction. Then she looked at Lynn. "Child, your mother has carried something alone for a long time. I am going to say it now, because a stranger at the well is about to say it worse." Lynn's cup stopped halfway to her mouth. "Your father hurt your mother. For years. The scars on her arms are his. I watched and I did nothing, and I am ashamed of that. When I understood he would turn on you next, I acted. He is gone. He is not coming back. His sister is here looking for him. She will find nothing." Charlie's face crumpled. Lynn set the cup down without a sound. She looked at her mother's sleeves, then at Elsa. "You," Lynn said. Not a question. "Me," Elsa said. "Not the boy. Not anyone at his table. Me." Charlie began to cry. Lynn slid off the chair and knelt beside her mother and pressed her forehead to Charlie's knee. Elsa waited. Then, gently: "The sister will come to your door. You will tell her he left in the night. You did not see where. You were glad. That is the whole truth you owe her." Charlie nodded into her daughter's hair. "Clara will walk you home," Elsa said. "She will stay through supper." When the door shut, Elsa sat alone with three cooling cups. She had bought Bodhi's crown six more days. The sister would leave with a widow's story and no name to carry. The stain would not reach the boy. Six days left. One task closed.
