Chapter 47

By dusk Elsa had a plan and three days left. The cousin elder would move against Bodhi the moment she was gone. She would not leave a seated enemy behind her. She sent word through Jasper: guardians to the cellar under the meeting hall at full dark. No lanterns in the lane. No talk at the well. She went down first. The stone room smelled of wet root and old smoke. The carved symbols on the walls caught the torchlight and threw it back in patches. She set the sapphire stake on the strawberry vine table and waited. Fern came down the steps with Clara behind her. Jasper ducked under the beam. Nancy came last, still in her purple cardigan, one hand on the rail. Dahlia was already there, hooded, at the far wall, running a dirt-caked finger along a mark only she and Bodhi could read. "The cousin," Elsa said. "He will not wait a week. We decide tonight how he is stopped. A mark, a bargain, or a quieter thing." Nancy opened her mouth. She did not get the word out. The wolf came down the steps. It did not look at Elsa. It walked past her, past Jasper, past the table, and stopped at the foot of the stairs on the far side. It turned its head and waited. Dahlia straightened. "It wants us to follow." "Where?" Clara said. The wolf climbed one step and looked back. Elsa understood before the others. "To the boy." They went up in single file. The wolf took them through the frost lane to Fern's schoolhouse. Bodhi was awake at the low table, the ledger open in front of him, the reindeer standing in the doorway with frost still on its antlers. He had known they were coming. He had drawn nothing on the page yet. The wolf sat at his right hand. The reindeer lowered its head at his left. Bodhi looked at Elsa and did not ask her what to do. "The cousin elder," he said. "Say his name aloud, Dahlia." Dahlia said it. Wren, who had come in behind them without a sound, opened the ledger to a clean line and set the pen beside Bodhi's hand. Bodhi did not take the pen. He looked at the wolf. The wolf held his eyes. He looked at the reindeer. The reindeer did not move. "Not a cross," Bodhi said. "He hasn't struck yet. A circle around his seat, not his life. He steps down from the elders' bench by morning, or the mark changes." He drew the circle himself. Dahlia nodded once. Wren closed the book. "Jasper," Bodhi said, "walk to his door tonight. Tell him what I've written and who watched me write it. Tell him the wolf came for the decision." Jasper went. He came back before the moon cleared the roofs. The cousin would resign at dawn. He had not argued. Elsa stood in the schoolhouse doorway. The seat behind her was safe. The boy had done it without her. Three days remained, and she had nothing left to hold.
