Chapter 49

Clara came to the driftwood hut before the morning fire had caught. Nancy was with her, her purple cardigan buttoned wrong at the collar. Elsa knew before either spoke. A guardian did not bring the librarian to her door at dawn unless something in the rite had already cracked. "The miller's wife," Clara said. "She told me last night she won't come tomorrow. Won't send the boy either." Elsa set down the kettle. "Reason." "She says he watches her son too long in the lane. She says the crown belongs on a village child, not on him." Clara's braid was still damp from the wash basin. "If she stays home, three others will follow. By noon it will be six. A ceremony with empty benches will be remembered as a broken one, not a binding." Nancy pushed her glasses up her nose. "Bring her to me. My library, before the doors open. Just the boy, me, and her. No crown on the table. No ledger. Only tea and books." Elsa weighed it. A public argument would spread the refusal. A private one, on ground the mother already trusted, might close it. "Clara. Fetch her. Tell her Nancy asked, not me. Bodhi walks in on his own feet." Clara went. Elsa and Nancy walked to the library through the pale light. Nancy unlocked the wide door and lit the reading lamps under the crystals. She set out three cups and a plate of soft bread. Bodhi arrived with the reindeer at the step and left it in the yard. He sat where Nancy pointed, hands folded on the table. Clara returned with the miller's wife. The woman stopped inside the door with her arms crossed. She would not look at the boy. Nancy stood and took her hand as if she were a granddaughter come for a visit. "Sit with me. Just for the tea." The woman sat. Bodhi did not speak first. Nancy poured. Then Bodhi lifted his eyes to the mother. "You think I watch your son," he said. "I do. I watch every child in the lane. Clara taught me their names so I would not forget one. Your boy is Toby. He limps on the left foot when the cold comes in. I watch because if I do not know him, I cannot keep him." The mother's arms loosened. Nancy set the cup in front of her without a word. Clara moved to the mother's shoulder and stayed there. "Ask me anything," Bodhi said. "Before the crown. Not after." The mother asked three questions in a low voice. Bodhi answered each one plainly. She drank the tea. When she left, she told Clara she would come at midday and bring the boy. Elsa watched from the shelf. The refusal had held for one hour and broken in the second. But she had spent Nancy's welcome and Clara's word to break it. The next mother who wavered would need something she had not yet found.
