Chapter 56

Elsa stood at the front of the library with one hand on the reading table for balance. The woven crown sat on a folded cloth beside her. Nancy waited a step behind her left shoulder, ready to speak the warmth if Elsa's voice gave out. The mothers filled the benches. Larissa sat in the first row with her hands folded. Charlie sat beside her. The miller's wife and the two who had believed the frost rumor sat together near the aisle. Every face was turned toward the door. The door opened. Bodhi came in between Fern and Clara. His parka was buttoned wrong. His chalk stub was gone. He stopped inside the threshold and looked at the room. Elsa had spent weeks worrying about his mouth. She had planned to whisper corrections. She had asked Nancy to smile beside her so the boy could copy the shape. She had never found a way to teach him what her own face did without thinking. The Peters girl slid off her mother's lap and waved. The cobbler's twins grinned from the second bench. The miller's boy lifted a hand. Larissa's face softened first. Then Charlie's. Then the miller's wife, who had almost kept her son home. The warmth in the room moved toward the boy before anyone said a word. Bodhi looked at them. He looked at Nancy. He looked at Elsa. His smile came. It was not taught. It was not the wide, still thing the whisper had put on him at dawn. It was crooked and gap-toothed and his own, and it opened the way Elsa's had opened for forty years in this village — because the person wearing it knew he was among his people. The children were his. The mothers were his. The room was his. He had a place, and his face knew it before his mind did. Elsa felt her chest loosen. She had been trying to hand him a tool. He had grown the thing itself. She lifted the crown. Her hands shook. Nancy stepped up beside her and steadied the rim without taking it. Elsa set it on Bodhi's head herself. Her voice held for the words she needed most. "This is my successor," she said. "You have seen his face. Keep it." Larissa stood. She crossed to Bodhi and put her hand on his cheek the way a mother does. The miller's wife stood next. Then Charlie. The mothers came forward one by one and touched him, and each one smiled back at the smile he was already wearing. Elsa sat down in the chair Nancy pulled out for her. The fragile acceptance she had feared losing was no longer fragile. Bodhi turned in the crown and looked for her across the room, still smiling, and she understood the smile would outlast her. The village had a warm face again. It was his.
