Chapter 64

The morning after the potluck, the village woke uneasy. Elsa sat by the hut window in her wool robe and watched the square. Mothers passed with baskets and did not look at the door. A cobbler stopped mid-step, glanced at the driftwood walls, and moved on. She had given her smile in front of forty-one witnesses. But Bodhi had not yet worn it back to them, and the village was already starting to doubt what they had seen. Bodhi came in with chalk on his knuckles. He had been at the cottage since dawn. "I want to build something," he said. "For her. In the square. So they see it every day." Fern set the teal crystal key on the table beside Clara's tea. Clara wiped her hands on her apron and sat. Bodhi drew on the boards with the chalk stub: a tall spire, vines around it, a plaque at the center. "Crystal," he said. "So the light catches it at noon." Fern turned the key in her fingers. "My grandmother kept a shard the size of a forearm behind the cottage door. It will cut clean if we shape it before the frost sets again." Clara looked at the drawing. "It's a good thought. But four hands can't lift it to the square, and the plaque needs the right words." She pushed back from the table. "Get Nancy. She wrote every eulogy this village has kept." Nancy came within the hour, glasses fogged from the walk. She read the chalk drawing on the boards, then looked at Bodhi over the rims. "You want them to see her when you can't be there," she said. He nodded. Nancy set a hand on his shoulder. "This is your love for her showing itself. And it will show them you see how they loved her too. That is the whole gift." She sat and began drafting the plaque words on a scrap. By afternoon they had the shard shaped and vined, strawberry and blackberry threaded around a silver-and-gold plate. Jasper carried it on a plank to the square. Bodhi rang the bell at the well stone. Villagers came slow at first, then in waves. Larissa. The Peters mother. The cobbler with his twins. Elsa walked from the hut on Fern's arm and stood at the edge. Bodhi stepped up on the well stone. He read Nancy's words. He named Elsa's forty years at the door. He named every household that had brought a dish. Then he lifted his face to them. He smiled. It was crooked and gap-toothed and wide. It was his own. The mothers saw it and their shoulders dropped. Larissa laughed once, sharp with relief. The Peters girl clapped. The doubt went out of the square like heat off a stone. Elsa felt her legs give a little against Fern. The village had its warm face now. It was not hers.
