Chapter 66

Three days left. Elsa sent Jasper to fetch Bodhi to the hut alone. She wanted no guardians at the door, no reindeer on the path, no mothers in line. Just the boy and her, one last quiet hour before the ground took her. She had crown, cloak, and hut set aside for the rite. But nothing small. Nothing he could carry in a pocket when the wind cut and the seat felt too big for him. Without that, his rule might feel hollow the first cold morning after she was buried. Bodhi came in with snow on his shoulders and his chalk stub in one hand. He shook off the parka and sat on the bench by her knee. Elsa reached under the wool blanket and drew out the woven box she had kept hidden there for a week. Blackberry and strawberry vines twisted around its sides. A silver and gold plaque on the lid carried her name. She set it in his lap. "For after," she said. "Open it when the seat feels too cold." He ran a thumb over the plaque. He did not open the box. Instead he pulled a small notebook from inside his shirt. The cover was smudged with chalk. "I made something too," he said. "For after. I want you to hear it now." He opened the notebook on his knee and cleared his throat like he had watched her do at meetings. He read. He said her name first. He said the day he walked into the library for his ceremony and felt her warmth land inside his chest before she had even spoken. He said he had watched her forty years of small things — how she set bread at a door, how she waited before answering a hard question, how she looked at a child before she looked at the mother. He said he would try to keep those things running in the village after she was gone. His voice held. He did not perform. He read like a boy reading a list of true facts. Elsa's eyes filled. She did not wipe them. She had spent a season worrying he would inherit an empty seat with nothing of her he could hold. He had made the keepsake himself. She opened the box in his lap and lifted out the necklace she had woven inside — a crystal pendant wrapped in vine, on a silver and gold chain. She placed it around his neck herself. Her hands did not shake this time. "Wear it when you speak that," she said. "So they see me on you." He closed the notebook. He tucked it back inside his shirt, next to the pendant. He did not cry. He held her hand until the fire burned low. When Jasper came at dusk, Bodhi walked out with both keepsakes on him. Two days left. She had nothing more to give.
