Chapter 1

Elspeth Moonwhisper had been dead for eleven years, and she had spent every one of them trying to keep a promise she had already broken. Tonight she stood on the edge of a stranger's garden, watching her own hands pass through a fence post. The sky above the valley was already turning gray. She had until dawn. If the sun found her still tethered, she would scatter, and the child she had failed would remain unfound. The spell that held her was half-made. A living witch had begun her release years ago and died before finishing the words. Elspeth needed a living hand to speak the last part aloud. She had tried for years. Dogs saw her. Cats saw her. People did not. She walked through the garden toward the cottage. Pale blooms grew in a low patch by the door, drifting wisps rising from the petals. A patch tended by someone who knew the dead. Elspeth felt a small, cold hope. Inside, an old woman sat at a table sorting roots into piles. Her hands were steady. Her eyes, when they lifted, went past Elspeth to the window. "I am here," Elspeth said. The woman did not turn. Elspeth said it again, louder, and the roots on the table did not move. A ghost girl in a white dress stepped out from the corner of the room. She looked at Elspeth. She looked at the old woman. Then she walked to the table and tapped one small finger against the wood. The old woman looked down. "Two of you tonight," she said. She reached into a shelf and set a vial on the table. The glass was cut like a jewel and the liquid inside moved on its own. "I have one. It is not for you to keep. You drink it, you say what you need to say, and then you go." She spoke to the room. She did not know which ghost she was speaking to. The ghost girl pointed at Elspeth. The old woman poured a measure into a cup and pushed the cup across the table. Elspeth reached. Her fingers closed. The cup was cold and real. She drank. The room sharpened. Her hand on the table was a hand. "My name is Elspeth Moonwhisper," she said. "A witch began a spell to free me and died before she finished. I need you to say the last words. I have them written down. I have carried them for eleven years." The old woman looked at her for a long time. "I am Elara Rootwhisper," she said. "Show me the words." Elspeth pulled the folded paper from inside her sleeve, where it had lived, unreadable to anyone but her, since the night she died. She laid it on the table. Elara Rootwhisper picked it up. Outside, the sky was still gray. The dawn had not come yet. It was coming.
