Chapter 2

Elara Rootwhisper held the paper flat under the lamp. Her lips moved as she read the first line to herself. Elspeth stood across the table with her borrowed hands pressed against the wood. The potion was working. She could feel the grain under her palms. The ghost girl in the white dress had drifted to the window and gone very still. "Someone is coming," the girl said. Elspeth turned. Beyond the glass, past the pale blooms in the garden, a tall figure moved between the fence posts. Long hair. A dress that dragged. She did not walk so much as arrive, closer each time Elspeth blinked. Elspeth knew her by the cold that came first. The pale woman. The one who took the dead when the living saw them. "She felt me," Elspeth said. "She felt the cup in my hand." Elara did not lift her eyes from the paper. Her finger moved down the lines, slow. "I need to read it right," Elara said. "If I say it wrong, it does nothing." The door rattled. Not a knock. A test. The ghost girl backed against the wall and put both hands over her mouth. Elspeth looked at the vial on the shelf, then at the old iron pot beside the hearth. The rule she had learned in eleven years of hiding came back to her clean. Sound loosens the pale woman's grip. She grabbed the pot with hands that were, for now, hands. She swung it against the stone hearth. The clang filled the cottage. She swung again. The door stopped rattling. Outside, the tall figure stumbled one step back in the garden, her head tipped as if the noise hurt. "Read," Elspeth said. "Read now." Elara read. Her voice was flat and exact. Six words. Then four more. Elspeth kept hitting the pot against the stone in a hard, steady beat. The pale woman put one hand on the window. The glass frosted where her fingers touched. Elara reached the last line. She spoke it plain, the way she spoke everything. The paper went blank in her hand. Something in Elspeth's chest loosened, then caught. She had expected to go. She did not go. She looked down at her hands. Still hands. Still here. The pale woman lowered her arm from the window. She turned and walked back toward the fence, slow, unhurried, as if the matter was only postponed. Elspeth set the pot down. The clang stopped. The room was very quiet. "It was the right spell," Elara said. "You are still standing." Elspeth nodded once. The spell was finished and she was not free. The promise she had broken was still holding her here, more than any half-made words. She folded the blank paper and put it back inside her sleeve. "Then it isn't the spell," she said. "It's the child."
