Chapter 3

By midmorning, Elliot's shop was packed. Fern had agreed to stand behind his counter and advise his customers. Now she regretted it. A farmer waved a rusted hinge. A woman described a leaky pipe with her hands. A boy asked why his gate wouldn't latch. They talked over each other, and Fern couldn't picture a single problem. "Tell me again," she said to the farmer. "Which way does the door swing?" He shrugged. He'd left the door at home. So had everyone. Words weren't enough. She needed to see the broken things to fix them, and the broken things were scattered across town. Elliot wrung his soft hands. "They keep coming. I keep pointing them at you." He smiled, helpless. "But you can't mend a pipe that isn't here." Fern climbed onto a crate. "Everyone, listen! I can't help you standing here. Go home. Bring your broken thing to the shop, or let me come to you. One at a time." The crowd grumbled, but it thinned. Then a quiet voice spoke near the door. "I brought mine." It was Vera Lund, the old seamstress whose roof Fern had saved. Her scarred hands held a wooden sewing box with a split lid. Fern had patched Vera's roof in the storm, guarding sixty years of patterns. Vera trusted her now. "The hinge tore loose," Vera said. "My thread spills every time I open it." She set the box on the counter so Fern could see the cracked wood and the bent pin. Fern turned it in her hands. Here was the whole problem, plain in front of her. "This I can fix." She chose a small brass hinge from Elliot's drawer and two short screws. In minutes the lid shut clean. Vera opened and closed it twice, pleased. The watching customers leaned in. They understood now. Fern needed the thing itself, not a story about it. Beside Vera stood a plump, silver-haired woman in a pressed cardigan, a packed bag on her shoulder. Sylvie Nettlewick, the Pinehollow librarian, had never left home in sixty years until this journey north. She watched Fern work with careful eyes. "You should keep a bench here," Sylvie said. "A mending bench. Folks bring the broken thing. You fix it where everyone sees." Fern stared at the crowded shop and saw the answer. "A repair bench. Right here in Elliot's shop." Elliot clapped his soft palms. "Yes! My parts, your hands, one counter." By afternoon, Fern had cleared a corner and dragged in a wide table. A line formed, each person holding something cracked or bent. She fixed Vera's neighbor's latch, then a kettle handle. Word spread fast down the road. By dusk, too many things waited in a pile. Fern had solved the crowding. Now she had more work than one pair of hands could finish before the shop closed.
