Chapter 4
The next morning the pile at the repair bench was worse. A kettle, three hinges, a cracked stool, a lamp with a bent arm. Fern reached for her small pliers and couldn't find them. Her tools lay scattered across the narrow bench, under rags and spare screws. She dug for a screwdriver, knocked a jar loose, and watched washers roll to the floor. Every fix cost her two minutes of hunting first. The line stretched to Elliot's door, and the pile only grew.
Elliot wrung his soft hands beside her. "They keep bringing more. I keep taking their names." He smiled, helpless. "But you're drowning back here."
Fern wiped grease from her cheek. The problem wasn't her hands. It was the bench itself. Too cramped, too cluttered. She needed every tool in one fixed place, each where she could grab it without looking. But she had no wall rack, no slotted board, and no time to build one from scratch.
The door opened and a wiry old woman stepped in. A faded ribbon hung on her flannel shirt, and she carried an axe that shone too fine for firewood. Cora Halven, who split logs faster than women half her age and never said why. She eyed the mess on the bench. "You're losing to clutter," she said. "Saw it the moment I walked in."
Fern knew her by reputation. Cora didn't waste words or motion. "I can't fix fast and hunt for tools at the same time," Fern said. "I need a rack. A board with a spot for each one."
Cora set her axe against the wall. "Pegboard," she said. "Hang them all where you can see them." She looked at Elliot. "You stock any wide planks?" Elliot hurried off and came back with a tall pine board and a sack of hooks. Cora took it, measured it against the wall with her eyes, and nodded.
Sylvie Nettlewick had come in behind Cora, her packed bag on her shoulder. She set down the bag and picked up a pencil. "Let me trace each tool," she said. "Outline on the board. Then everyone knows where it goes back." She laid Fern's hammer flat and drew around it, careful as copying a map.
They worked as a team. Cora drilled holes and drove the hooks. Fern bolted the board to the wall above the bench. Sylvie traced every tool, then hung each one in its outline. Pliers here, chisels there, screwdrivers by size. The scattered mess rose off the bench and onto the wall. The tabletop cleared. Now Fern had space to work and every tool in plain sight.
She tested it. She reached for the small pliers without looking and found them under her hand. Then the screwdriver. Then the file. No hunting. No knocked jars. She fixed the kettle in a minute, the hinges in three. The pile shrank. By noon the line reached the counter instead of the door. By late afternoon the bench was empty.
Silas Oakhurn arrived as the last customer left, his white beard dusted with flour, his laugh loud from the road. He carried a chair with a wobbly leg. "Heard you cleared the whole pile," he said. "The whole road's heard." He set the chair down and watched her pull a clamp straight off the wall. "Fast hands and a fast reach now."
Fern glued and clamped the leg in under two minutes. Silas turned to the others. "Travelers at my inn keep asking who fixes things around here. I tell them the same name every time." He looked at Fern. "Pinehollow's handywoman. That's you now."
Vera Lund stood in the doorway, her scarred hands folded. "He's right," she said softly. "I told my neighbors you saved my patterns. They told theirs." The others nodded. Cora picked up her axe. "You beat the clutter," she said. "Takes a real hand to do that." It was high praise from a woman who never gave it.
Fern looked at the clean bench, the full board of tools, the empty chair now steady under Silas's palm. She had come to Pinehollow fixing one roof in a storm. Now the whole road knew her name and brought her their broken things. She wasn't hunting for tools anymore, or for a place to belong. She had earned both. Fern tightened her tool belt, smiled at the room full of friends, and reached for the next thing someone would surely bring.
