Chapter 3

Three hours at Elowen's table left Feyre with nothing. She copied the same symbol forty times. Each one looked wrong beside the original. The ancient script refused her. Her eyes burned. The black line on her arm throbbed with every heartbeat. Elowen bent over her own page, silent, patient, and that patience made it worse. Feyre needed the words to open. They stayed shut. At last she pushed back her chair. "I need to eat. I need to stop staring at this." Elowen nodded without looking up. "Rest the eyes. The mind keeps working." Feyre found the inn by its crooked roof and patched walls. Inside, lamplight warmed a low room. A broad man with long dreads worked the stove behind the bar. White patches marked his dark hands as he stirred a heavy pot. He looked up and smiled like he already knew her. "Sit anywhere. Stew's oxtail. My grandmother's recipe." He ladled a bowl before she asked and set it down himself. "You look like someone chasing a thing that won't be caught. Eat first." His name was Thaddeus. He said it plainly, then went back to his pot. She took a small table pieced from mismatched wood. A man sat two seats over, a book open, a spoon forgotten in his hand. He read without blinking. When she pulled out her notebook of failed symbols, he glanced at the page. "Fae origin script," he said. Flat. Certain. "You're copying it wrong. You're drawing the whole shape at once." Feyre stiffened. Strangers did not read her work. "And you are?" "Lucien." He closed his book. "I read more than I should. I forget almost nothing. That symbol isn't one mark. It's three, drawn in order. Breath, then bind, then seal." He turned her notebook and traced the strokes with one finger. "You started from the outside. Start from the center. The old scripts always do." She looked at her forty ruined copies. Every one began at the edge. She dipped her pen and tried his way. Center first. Breath, bind, seal. The strokes connected. The symbol held. It matched the page in the book. "Again," Lucien said. She did it again. It held again. Her breath came short. For six days the script had been a wall. Now one line of it was hers. "Why help me?" she asked. "You needed it." He paused. "I've done worse to people who needed more. This is easier." He did not explain it. Thaddeus set a second bowl in front of Lucien without being asked. Feyre worked through her meal, copying symbol after symbol the new way. By the time the bowl was empty, she had four she could read on sight. The wall had a door now. She looked at Lucien, this stranger who forgot nothing, and felt something loosen that she did not fully trust. "I have a teacher," she said. "She couldn't make me see this in three hours. You did in three minutes." Lucien shrugged. "Then come back tomorrow. I'll still be here."
