Chapter 4

Feyre came back to the inn the next night with the ancient book in her bag. Rain hammered the patched roof. Lucien sat at the same table, a book open, a spoon forgotten in his hand. Thaddeus set a bowl of oxtail stew in front of her before she asked. "You look worse than yesterday," he said. He touched the black line on her arm with one scarred finger, then went back to his pot. He stated it and let it go. Feyre watched Lucien read her script without effort. That was the problem. She knew nothing about him. Yet he saw her symbols faster than a scholar who studied them for decades. The book held one symbol that named her curse. Say it wrong, and it would kill her faster. She could not hand that to a stranger she did not trust. She opened the book to a safe page first. No curse-name. Just three symbols she had already copied. "Read these," she said. "Tell me what they mean." Lucien read them aloud, slow and exact. His meaning matched her own copies stroke for stroke. Then he stopped. "You're testing me," he said. "You left out the page you actually need." Feyre's hand tightened on the cover. "How do you know that?" "Because I'd do the same." He closed his own book. "You don't trust me. You're right not to. Once, someone needed me, and I protected someone else instead. That's who I am." He said it flat, without asking her to forgive it. "But I won't read a word to you that I'm not sure of. Speaking it wrong would cost you. I know what the script costs." The honesty landed harder than charm would have. Feyre turned to the real page. She pointed to the curse-name symbol, the one that matched the mark on her arm. "This one. Don't speak it. Just draw it. Show me the three strokes so I can read it myself." Lucien studied it a long moment. He wet his finger and traced on the table. Center first. Breath. Bind. Seal. He never once said the word aloud. "The seal stroke bends twice," he said. "Yours only bends once. That's why it looks wrong." Feyre copied his line. The symbol held. She read it in her own mind, silent, and felt it settle true. She did not speak it. The curse-name was hers now, learned safely, from a man who refused to risk her life to prove his worth. "Stay here tonight," Thaddeus said from the bar. "Roads flood past dark. I've one room left." He handed her a key. Feyre climbed the narrow stairs with Lucien behind her. She opened the door and stopped. One bed. Wide, handmade, layered with blankets. She had asked for two. Lucien looked at the single bed, then at her. "I'll take the floor," he said. "No," Feyre said. "You won't."
