Chapter 1

Finn Ashford stepped between the frosted trees and felt the scar above his left eyebrow tighten in the cold. He had walked this forest once before. He had left it with a split brow, an empty pack, and a memory of two days spent carrying a relic that hummed sounds he could not call wind. He had not been afraid then. That still bothered him more than the losing. He meant to find the relic again. The trail had gone cold weeks ago, and every day in this forest made it colder. The old house stood where he remembered, lower in the shoulders than before. Sheets sagged in the windows. Webs hung from the porch beams like grey laundry. He had used it as a base on the last expedition and pinned every dead lead to the cork board inside: a torn map edge, a feather, a buyer's name crossed out twice. Winter had pushed the roof another inch toward the floor. He set his pack on the table, unrolled his gear, and laid out his diary, his hammer, and the two silver daggers with diamond-set handles. He had work to do before dark. He needed food and he needed fur. He circled the house once and found prints in the snow near the pond, small paws, three drag marks behind each track. A foxling. Female, by the spread. The light was already thin between the trunks. He followed the prints with both daggers loose at his belt. He found her nosing at a frozen root, calico coat bright against the snow, three tails fanned for balance. Finn crouched low and drew one blade. He waited until her head dipped. "Forgive me," he whispered, and lunged. One swing. The foxling dropped without a sound. He knelt and said a short prayer over the body, the kind his mother had used for game. Then he lifted her by the hind legs and carried her back through the blue dusk to the house. He built a fire in the cracked hearth until the room glowed orange. He skinned the foxling on the table, set the meat to roast, and stretched the pelt by the flames. Then he opened his diary and uncapped the pen. Dear diary, he wrote. I am back at the pond house. The trail is dead. I have nothing pinned to the board that points anywhere new. Tomorrow I start again from the last place I held it. He stopped, looked up at the empty cork above the table, and added one more line. Tonight I heard the wind, and it was only wind. He underlined only twice, closed the diary, and watched the fire until the meat was done.
