Chapter 10

Three days after the pause, Gemini Venus came back to the warm room beneath the Hall of Mirrors. The scar had held. But the first real session had already gone wrong. Taurus Jupiter poured tea and told a story about a cold doorway. Sagittarius Midheaven cut in with a question about the nature of selfhood. Both of them meant well. Neither helped. One hour passed and the split felt no closer. Gemini Venus left shaking in stereo, as they had arrived. They understood the problem on the walk home. The meetings had no shape. Without one, the talk would circle while the gap kept widening. So they came back with a plan on paper. They spread it on the low table. "We need a structure," both mouths said, in turn. "Not philosophy. Rules. Each session gets one question. We answer it and we stop. No drifting." Taurus leaned forward, pleased. "A frame for the warm room. I can hold that." Sagittarius crossed his arms. "Sounds like a cage. Pain does not keep a schedule." He was blunt. He was not wrong about the risk. But a cage was exactly what Gemini Venus needed. They did not expect the fourth person. She stood in the doorway in black gloves twined with vines. Taurus's former companion from the hard days had sent her, she said flatly. Virgo Lilith. She had read the plan over Gemini Venus's shoulder from the hall. "Your frame is broken," she said. No greeting. "You built it to keep the talk tidy. But you put the hardest question last. You will quit before you reach it. Everyone does." She tapped one line on the page. "Start there. The thing you will not look at. First session, not last." The room went still. Sagittarius almost smiled. Taurus set down the pot. Gemini Venus stared at the single corrected line. It was the loose thread, and Virgo had pulled it in one sentence. One of their selves flinched. The other held. "She's right," both said. They crossed out the order and rewrote it. The wolf-faced self, the thing built from what they would not look at, went to the top. They tested the new frame that same hour. One question. The hard one, first. Taurus held the warmth. Sagittarius held the edge. Virgo named each dodge before it finished forming. For the first time the talk did not circle. It went straight down. When the hour ended, Gemini Venus felt the gap sit quiet. Not healed. Steady. A method now existed where none had. Virgo pulled on her gloves to leave. "I won't come back every time," she said. "I don't do schedules." She paused at the door. "But the frame holds. For now." Then she was gone, before anyone could ask her to stay. Gemini Venus looked at the rewritten page. The sessions had a shape at last. The next one would open with the wolf.
