Chapter 11

The next session opened with the wolf, as planned. Gemini Venus sat in the warm room and named the merged self aloud. Taurus held the warmth. Sagittarius held the edge. The frame worked. The split sat steady while they spoke. Then the question came that no frame could answer. Both mouths asked it at once, and both voices stopped. "If unity costs identity, why do we still want it?" The room went quiet. Taurus had no story for that. Sagittarius had no argument. The question was too close to the scar. Gemini Venus felt the gap waver. Avoid it, and the steadiness would break. They left before the hour ended. Not to run. To breathe. Outside the Hall of Mirrors, the air was cool. A figure waited on the steps below, hood up, boots scuffed. Glowing mushrooms grew from the dirt cupped in her hands. Cancer Mercury. The neighbor who lived past the far hedge. They had traded nods for years and little else. She was a courier once, before her cargo spilled and she stopped delivering. "You walked out like the floor was tilting," she said. Her voice was slow and plain. "I know that walk." "The question has no answer," both mouths said. "Not one we can reach alone." Cancer Mercury tilted her head. "Then stop trying to reach it alone." She stepped back and nodded toward the path down the slope. "I have a place. Quiet. You can sit with the thing instead of fighting it." Gemini Venus hesitated. The lab was secret. The scar was private. But the gap was already wavering, and the warm room had failed. They followed her. She led them down to the shore and a low pool where water pushed in slow and dark. She set the mushrooms at the edge. Their glow spread across the surface. "Memories leak out here," she said. "I used to haul them in bottles. Most broke. I kept asking why I still wanted the route when the route was gone." She looked at the water. "The want doesn't need a reason to be real." Gemini Venus sat on the wet stone. The question still had no answer. But Cancer Mercury had not asked for one. The gap stopped wavering. Both selves breathed in time. "The want is the proof," both said slowly. "Not the flaw. The proof that something in us still reaches." Cancer Mercury almost smiled. "There it is." They did not solve the merge that night. The arc goal stayed open. But Gemini Venus learned a new thing. The hardest question did not need an answer to be survived. It needed a witness. They rose from the stone steady, for the first time, without a machine or a frame holding them up. Now they knew the scar could be shared. The next step would be deciding who else to let near it.
