Chapter 1

Gimble Cogsworth had one hour to convince the merchants, and he had spent three months building for it. He set twelve toys on the long table inside the council hall, a place of brass domes and stained glass that made his hands look small. The merchants filed in wearing coats stitched with gear pins. Gimble placed his best piece at the center: a clockwork music box with a bear that spun when you turned the key. He wanted them to fund a toy library, a place where the children of Sleepy Trees Forest could borrow toys the way people borrowed books. He had rehearsed the opening line all week. He never got to say it. The heavy door banged open, and a woodcarver from his own village walked in without an invitation. She pointed at the table and said, loud enough for every merchant to hear, that Gimble's project was a waste of wood and the merchants should keep their coin. The room went quiet. Gimble felt the sting settle in his chest, familiar by now, and he let it pass. He did not argue. He picked up the music box and wound the key. The bear began to spin, and the small tune filled the hall under the glass dome. He walked around the table and set the music box in the woodcarver's hands. He told her the library would lend this exact toy to any child in the village, including her nephew, who had asked to hold it after service last Sunday. She looked down at the spinning bear. She did not smile, but she stopped talking. The head merchant leaned forward and asked Gimble how many toys he could produce in a year. Gimble answered forty. The merchant wrote the number down. Then he said the company would fund a trial run of the library for six months, on one condition: the woodcarver, and any other doubters from the village, had to sign on as part of the oversight committee. He wanted the critics in the room, not outside it. The woodcarver handed the music box back. She said she would think about it. Gimble had his money and a new problem walking out the door with it.
