Chapter 2

Gimble left the council hall with a signed trial and a woodcarver who would not meet his eye. By morning, word from the oversight committee reached his workshop. The woodcarver had blocked the first stock list. She wanted a say in every toy that entered the library, and until she granted it, the committee would not approve a single shelf. Gimble set down his tools and walked out into the trees. If he could not win her over, the six months would end before they began. He found her cottage at the edge of the village, pipes hissing soft steam along its weathered walls. Margaret Holloway opened the door with sawdust on her apron and a chisel in her hand. She did not invite him in. Gimble asked what she wanted from the library. She said she wanted toys that lasted. She said half of what he brought to the merchants would split within a season. Then she turned the chisel in her fingers and told him her father had carved for forty years with tools she could no longer use. The best of them sat broken in a drawer. Gimble asked to see it. She brought out an old chisel with a cracked handle and a blade eaten by rust. Gimble knew the maker's mark. He asked to borrow it for two days. Margaret Holloway watched him for a long moment, then wrapped the chisel in cloth and handed it over. In his workshop he stripped the handle, boiled the blade clean, and ground the edge back on his father's stone. He fit a new grip cut from the same oak he used for his sturdiest toys. He returned to her cottage on the second evening and set the chisel in her palm. She pressed the edge to a scrap of pine and took a curl off it clean. She did not thank him. She asked him to sit down. They spent two hours at her table with the stock list between them. She crossed out four toys she said would break. She added three of her own designs, simple ones, built to survive a child. Gimble agreed to every change. Before he left, she told him she would sign off on the shelves in the morning, and she would tell the committee the list had her name on it too. Gimble walked home under the dark trees with the trial saved and a partner he had not asked for. He also had her father's mark in his ledger now, and a promise that every toy the library lent would meet her standard. The shelves would open. What went on them was no longer only his to choose.
