Chapter 11

Kai's seal showed Glacielle every hidden path by the next tide. She should have felt safer. Instead she counted what she owed. Three families had lost their reef to the drift-veil. She had promised Coralina she would repay them. But she had sold her grandmother's forge tools for the coral rights. Her purse held nothing. A promise with no coin behind it was a lie waiting to be caught. Coralina found her at the false ice castle, near the sea-glass snowman she had built for show. Coralina swam slow, her turtle-shell back catching the dim light, a crown of coral in her pale hair. She did not smile. "The families are asking," Coralina said. "One lost her whole catch. Another has children. When do you pay?" "I don't have the coin," Glacielle said. She made herself hold Coralina's eyes. "I sold everything for the rights. There's nothing left." Coralina's face went hard. "You promised me." "I know. I'm not breaking it." Glacielle turned toward the frozen chest built like a sleeping dragon, its trident and gold scale locked in ice. She cracked the seal with one cold hand. Inside lay her last things. Her grandmother's chisel, kept back from the sale. Two rings. A small merdragon carved from pale stone, its mint fins thin as leaves. "These are worth trade," Glacielle said. "Not coin. Goods. The families can sell them or keep them." Coralina stared at the chisel. "You said the tools were gone." "The forge tools are. This one I couldn't sell." Glacielle's throat tightened. "Now I will." Coralina lifted the carved merdragon. She turned it in the water. "This won't cover three families." "It won't." Glacielle pulled the two rings free. "So I add work. I'll freeze-joint new pens for their fish, in living reef, away from the veil. Walls that hold. They keep the goods and they get the pens." Coralina went quiet. The offer was not clean coin. It was everything Glacielle had and her own two hands on top. "They wanted repayment," Coralina said slowly. "Not charity from a beggar." "Then call it a debt paid in labor and trade." Glacielle closed the chest. "Bring them here. Let them choose what they take. I won't hide the state I'm in." Coralina studied her a long moment. Then she gathered the chisel, the rings, the merdragon into her arms. "I'll bring them at low tide," she said. "They'll want to see the pens before they trust you." She paused. "This clears the reef debt. It doesn't clear us." "I know," Glacielle said. Coralina swam out through the dead coral door. Glacielle looked at the empty chest. The families would be repaid. But three grieving strangers would soon swim through her reef, see her walls, and learn the shape of a secret she had guarded from everyone. She had spent her last coin and bought new witnesses.
