Chapter 10

Kai worked the far wall through two tides. He learned the freeze-joint fast, his hands steady on the cold seams. Glacielle watched him from the bench and could not settle. He built well. But she had not chosen him. Coralina had sent him down without asking. Every joint he sealed tied him tighter to a secret she had never given him leave to hold. She needed to know he could keep it before he brought anyone else through the dead coral door. So she tested him. She told him to carry the sea-glass seal to Lysander, who worked the lower street. It was a small task. She followed at a distance and hid behind a frozen pillar. Kai did not go straight to Lysander. He stopped at a broken gap in the outer wall, where the reef opened toward open water. He held the seal up and turned it in the light. Then he pulled something from his belt. A whistle carved from shell. Glacielle's chest went tight. She pushed off the pillar and swam hard. "Don't," she said. "Don't call anyone." Kai turned. He did not look caught. He looked tired. "I wasn't calling a patrol." He held out the whistle. "I was calling her." A shape slid through the gap. A harbor seal, its coat shimmering in bands of color, small white marks traced across its fur. It circled Kai once and pressed its nose to his hand. "She's mine," Kai said. "Bound to me. She swims where I can't be seen. When Coralina told me about this place, I sent the seal first, every tide, to learn if it was real. Not once did I let a soul follow her back." He looked at Glacielle. "You think I'd throw that away now that I'm inside?" Glacielle stared at the seal. Kai had a hidden route she'd never known. He could have sold the canyon a dozen times over. He hadn't. He had guarded it before she ever met him. "You could have opened that gap wide," she said. "You sealed it instead." "I sealed six of them." He touched the freeze-joint beside the gap, still cold from his own hands. "You didn't choose me. I know. But I chose this." Her fear did not vanish. It changed shape. Kai would keep the secret. She believed it now. But the seal circling him was a thing she had not counted. A creature that swam the reef unseen, loyal to a man, not to her. Her city had a route she did not control. "Take the seal," she said. "Show me every gap you sealed. Then show me every path she swims." Kai smiled and pushed off. The seal followed him like a shadow of light. Glacielle swam after them both. She had gained a builder she could trust and a road under the reef she could not yet close.
