Chapter 9

Aflred left at first tide, back to the surface to fetch stone tools. Glacielle stayed among the frozen streets, but her mind was on a different weight. Lysander Frost had drawn the enforcer off the ridge. He had thrown away three quiet years of chasing a woman he loved. Now he waited for what she owed him, and she had nothing left. She had already sold her grandmother's tools for the reef rights. There was no purse deep enough to pay a man who had spent his own heart. He came through the dead coral door before she was ready. Lysander, tall and pale, all his blue clothes still damp from the drunken act on the ridge. He moved like a prince who had forgotten how. He looked at the walls she had raised, then at her. "You owe me," he said. "I have come to name the price." Glacielle's throat went tight. "I can't pay in coin. I have none." "I did not come for coin." He crossed to a half-built wall and pressed his hand to a freeze-joint, the way she did. "The woman I chased was merfolk. Tide law would never let us stand together on the surface. Three years I said nothing, because there was nowhere to say it." He turned. "You are building that nowhere. Give me a place in it. Not a debt paid. A share held." Glacielle stared. She had braced for a demand she could not meet. Instead he asked to become part of the very thing he had saved. "You want to help build," she said slowly. "I want a door I can bring her through." He drew something from his coat. A marbled sea-glass talisman, a small seal crowned in gold. "Her people gave me this. A promise-token. If your city is real, I mean to use it." Another merman came behind him then. Younger, tan, a blue tail and a coral crown, his arms inked with dark swirls. He had guided Lysander down through the reef, and now he studied the frozen walls with open hunger. "Kai Deepcurrent," the newcomer said, before Glacielle could ask. "I brought him under the tide line. Your ally Coralina told me where the dead coral door was." He touched a cold joint and smiled. "She said you needed people who could keep a secret. I can. And I can carry more of them down here than a wolf can." Glacielle's debt was gone. In its place stood two men who wanted the city built, and a route through the reef that no patrol watched. She had feared the reckoning would empty her. It filled her hands instead. "Then you both hold a share," she said. She set Lysander's sea-glass seal on the bench beside the coral peacock. "Learn the freeze-joint. We start at the far wall." The debt closed. But now three people knew the true canyon, and only one of them had she chosen.
