Chapter 13

The families were gone, but their trail stayed. Glacielle stood by the dead coral door and counted the people who now knew the way in. Nine at least. Five of them held equal shares in her city. Five partners, and no rule for who could pass the door. One careless mouth on the surface would send enforcers straight down the reef. She called them together inside the half-built hall. Kai came with his coral crown crooked. Coralina came slow, still cold from the veil. Aflred leaned on his sickle staff, breath frosting the water. Lysander drifted in last, blue coat and blond hair, saying nothing yet. One more shadow filled the door. A merman she had never met. His body was covered in tattoos, each one a scar with a story. He held a trident worn smooth from use. He did not smile. "Who let him in?" Glacielle asked. "I did," Lysander said. "He's the guard my lover trusts. Thaldrin." Thaldrin looked at the shining walls. "Bad walls," he said. "They glow. Patrols will see." "They see nothing while the veil holds," Aflred said. "Veils die." Thaldrin's voice stayed flat. "Then what?" Glacielle felt the room tip toward panic. Every partner wanted to bring someone. A lover, a family, a friend who trusted them. Each guest was a crack in the wall. "Here is the rule," she said. "No one enters unless a sworn partner brings them. The partner who brings them answers for them. If a guest talks, the partner loses their share. Every one of you owns the secret. Every one of you can lose it." Silence. Coralina spoke first. "You said you'd consult me. You didn't." "I'm asking now," Glacielle said. "Say yes or say no." Coralina studied her, then nodded once. "Yes. But I hold you to it." Kai grinned. "My seal already guards the outer path. I'll swear." Lysander pressed his hand flat to the ice. "Sworn." Aflred bowed his frost-white head. Only Thaldrin stayed still. He turned his trident slow in his hands. "I swear for no city," he said. "I swear for one person. The one who left. If she's ever here, I stay. If not, I go." Glacielle looked at the tattooed grief on his arms. She understood a person searching for someone the tide law tore away. "Then swear for her," she said. "Same rule. You bring her. You answer for her." Thaldrin met her eyes. He pressed the butt of his trident to the floor. "Sworn." Six now, not five. She had traded five loose ends for one shared law. If any of them broke it, they broke themselves too. But Thaldrin had said it plain. Veils die. The rule guarded people. It could not guard against the day Aflred's cold layer failed and the walls shone bare to the patrols above.
