Chapter 14

The next moon was six days out. Glacielle had promised the reef families finished pens by then. She had one pen done and no way to build three more in time. Her hands were her only tool now. She had sold the forge tools. She had no coin, no chisel left, no rings. Every wall she froze took a full day. The math did not work. She would break her word, and Coralina would watch her do it. She went back to the dead reef alone and stared at the empty water. One frozen pen sat there, small and clean. Beside it lay the parts she could not join fast enough: slabs of clear ice, curved coral pieces, snow-white forms cut for corners. She had made every part by hand and stacked them in rows. The parts were ready. Only the joining was slow. Then she saw it different. She did not need to build three pens. She needed to build one thing three times. She dragged the rows into a line. Slab, then form, then coral, then slab again. If she froze each joint in the same order, down the line, she could move without stopping to think. An assembly line of ice. "You'll freeze your own hands off," Kai said. He drifted down with his coral crown crooked. He had helped her herd fish through her half-built walls before the last debt came due. He owed her nothing today. He came anyway. "Then push parts to me," she said. "Keep the line moving." He did. She froze joints down the row while Kai fed her the next slab, the next form, the next coral piece. The line ran. Her hands went numb. She did not stop. Two days passed inside the veil's cold dark. Three pens rose where none had stood. On the fifth day she froze the last seal. Three finished pens floated beside the first. Four in all. She had kept her word. Kai grinned and tapped an ice chest she had shaped for the families' first catch. It sat closed, curved like a sleeping dragon, a golden scale set in its lid. "They'll like this," he said. But the line had a cost. To feed it, Kai had opened his hidden path wide and hauled coral through it for two days straight. When the families came at low tide to claim their pens, they would see the path plain. They would follow it to the door. Glacielle looked at the four pens and the open water beyond them. She had traded a broken promise for a wider crack in her wall. The debt was paid. The secret was thinner than before.
