The elders dispersed into the swamp within the hour. Grix remained by the sacred stone tablet until the last of them vanished between the cypress trunks. He expected them to leave. What he did not expect was for one of them to return. The Bone Clan elder appeared at dusk, alone. She walked past the tall totem crowned with a lizard skull and crossed bones that marked her territory. Her tree hut loomed behind her, its bone decorations rattling in the evening wind. She stopped ten paces from Grix and planted her walking stick in the mud. On the stump beside her sat a dark stone wrapped in smoke, its wisps curling upward like accusation. Grix had seen that stone before, years ago, when his father's name was still spoken aloud. The elder pointed at it. "You want honor from my clan," she said. "Then tell me what your father did to earn this monument." Grix felt the weight of inherited silence press against his ribs. He opened his mouth, but no answer came. He had lived his whole life beneath this shadow without ever learning its shape. The elder watched him struggle, her expression hard as swamp oak. "You cannot earn what you will not account for," she said. She turned and walked back toward her hut, leaving the smoke stone between them like a wall. Grix stared at the stone until the fireflies in his staff cage dimmed. The elder's words had named the truth he had been avoiding: his grand display of power meant nothing to the Bone Clan because he had never faced what his father left behind. He could defeat a hundred rival mages and it would not matter. The path to becoming supreme spellcaster did not begin with proving his strength. It began with learning what sin he carried, and whether he had the courage to answer for it.
