Chapter 3

Grix returned to the sacred stone tablet at dawn, the elder's question still burning in his mind. The smoke stone monument stood where she had left it, its dark surface wrapped in wisps that moved like living things. He had avoided it all night, circling wide through the shallows, but now he stood before it with his staff planted in the mud. The monument was taller than he remembered, carved from stone that seemed to drink the morning light. He reached out to touch it, expecting heat or cold, but felt only smoothness. The smoke curled around his fingers without warmth. The stone cracked with a sound like splitting wood. Grix jerked his hand back as a line appeared down its center, widening as pieces of the monument fell away. Inside was a hollow space, and within that space sat a roll of parchment sealed with wax. He stared at it, his breath caught. The Bone Clan elder had presented this monument to shame him, but she had never opened it. Perhaps she did not know what it held. Perhaps no one did. Grix pulled the parchment free. The wax seal bore a mark he recognized from his father's belongings, a spiral within a circle. His hands shook as he broke it open and read the words written in his father's hand. The confession was short. His father had stolen healing secretions from the Bone Clan's sacred stores during a sickness that killed three children, selling them to distant traders for silver while the clan children died without medicine. The theft was deliberate. The profit was real. There was no justification offered, no plea for understanding. Grix read it twice, then a third time, hoping the words would change. They did not. He had spent his life believing his father's crime might be a misunderstanding, something he could explain or defend. But there was nothing to defend. His father had let children die for silver. The weight of that truth settled into his chest like swamp water filling a sinking boat. He looked toward the Bone Clan elder's hut in the distance. She had given him this monument knowing it would break eventually, knowing the truth would come out whether he sought it or not. The question was what he would do with it. He could burn the confession and pretend ignorance, but that would be his father's path. Or he could carry this truth to the elder and face whatever judgment came with it. His path to becoming supreme spellcaster had never been about power alone. It was about whether he had the strength to be a different man than his father.
