Chapter 13

Guidry pressed his back against the crumbling stone wall, watching Stryker tuck the glowing gem into a leather pouch. The cloaked figures remained motionless near the water's edge, but their stillness felt deliberate—like guards waiting for a command. He stepped forward, boots scraping stone. Stryker turned, and Guidry saw something glinting at her throat—a locket covered in iridescent scales that matched the gem's shimmer. "You used us," Guidry said, his voice flat. Stryker's hand went to the locket, fingers tracing the scales. "My grandmother made a deal with them forty years ago," she said, nodding toward the cloaked figures. "She promised them the gem if they'd lift a curse on our family. But she failed. So they waited." Croaker shifted beside her, face tight. "And we were just your way in." Stryker met Guidry's eyes without flinching. "I needed someone who knew the route. Someone desperate enough to trade their secret for coin." The words landed like stones. Guidry had thought he was selling leverage—turns out he'd been bought. But as Stryker turned back toward the cloaked figures, contract in hand, Guidry saw something he recognized: the same trapped look he'd carried for forty years. She hadn't won. She'd just traded one curse for another. He stepped back into the shadows, knowing now that respect wouldn't come from secrets or deals. It would come from refusing to be anyone's pawn again. Movement near the dead cultist's body caught his eye. A torn scrap of paper lay half-buried in mud, the handwriting elegant despite the water damage. Guidry picked it up, recognizing Stryker's name and a date—three weeks before she'd arrived at the western dock. The letter fragment detailed exact coordinates for the hidden route's entrance and instructions to secure a guide through blood oath. She'd known everything before their first meeting. Every hesitation, every negotiation had been theater. Guidry looked up at Stryker, who was watching him with that same unreadable expression. The cloaked figures began moving toward her, reaching for the gem. But Guidry stepped between them, the letter still in his hand. "The route stays mine," he said quietly. "Whatever deal you made with them, it ends at this chamber." Stryker's eyes widened slightly—the first real surprise he'd seen from her. The lead figure stopped, head tilting as if reconsidering. Guidry had been a pawn in someone else's game for forty years, silent and useful. Not anymore. Whether they respected him or not, they'd have to go through him to leave this marsh. That was a start.
