Chapter 14

Smoke rose from the western channel, thin and deliberate—a signal Guidry recognized from forty years of watching other guides mark their routes. Someone else had brought clients through the hidden passage. The cloaked figures turned toward the sound, and Guidry knew what came next: a second group arriving at the chamber meant witnesses, competition, and the end of any leverage he'd hoped to reclaim. The colorful hull of a wrecked airboat appeared first, beached on the muddy slope twenty yards from the ruins. A salamander in a straw hat stood on the deck, revolver raised high as he waved a group of armed fishermen forward. Guidry counted six of them—frogs with spear guns, a lizard carrying netting, all moving toward the chamber entrance where Stryker still held the gem. The salamander shouted directions, pointing at the glowing pouch in Stryker's hands. This wasn't exploration. It was a raid. Guidry stepped into the open, putting himself between the advancing group and Stryker. The salamander stopped, eyes narrowing. "Route's claimed," Guidry said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "You want the gem, you negotiate with me." The fishermen hesitated, looking between Guidry and their guide. The salamander lowered his revolver slowly, recognition dawning. "You're the one who found the passage," he said. Not a question. A fact that every guide in Serpent Village had finally learned. Guidry nodded once. The salamander holstered his weapon and turned to his clients. "We're leaving. This one earned it." Stryker moved beside Guidry as the rival group retreated toward their wrecked boat. The cloaked figures remained motionless, watching but no longer reaching for the gem. Guidry had spent forty years holding secrets, trading leverage, trying to buy respect with silence. But standing between two armed groups while they backed down—that was something different. That was authority. Stryker tucked the gem away and met his eyes. "They know your name now," she said quietly. Guidry watched the smoke signals fade across the marsh. Every guide in the bayou would hear what happened here today. Not the route. Not the secret. The fact that Guidry had claimed this chamber and made it stick. That was the reputation he'd been hunting all along.
