Chapter 10 of 10

The one step Demeter took did not warm the air. The wind cut across the frozen field, and Hades heard Persephone's teeth click together beside him. Her dark gown was thin. It was made for his halls, not for this. Behind Demeter, the city stood frozen — towers of glass and stone wrapped in ice, streets white and empty, the cold of a world that had stopped. Hades turned to his wife. Her lips were going gray. He had brought her up here in a gown of night silk and no cloak. He had not thought of the cold. He had thought of being seen. He lifted his hand. The runes of his witch ally rose around Persephone in a slow wheel — orange marks, a star inside a circle, turning close to her skin. The marks warmed the air in a tight ring. Her shivering eased. The frost on her shoulders melted and ran down the black silk. She breathed out, and her breath was no longer white. Demeter watched. Her gold torches did not lower, but her eyes followed the warm ring around her daughter. "You shield her," she said. Plain. Flat. "From me." "From the cold," Hades said. "Not from you." He kept the runes turning. He did not raise his scepter. He let the mother look at the daughter inside the warm light, alive, and held. Demeter took her second step. Then a third. Under her bare foot, the ice cracked. A black line opened in the frozen ground, and a single green shoot pushed up through it — small, bent, but green. It was not spring. It was one shoot in a dead field. But the ground had broken. Hades had bought his wife warmth, and the mother had answered with one living thing. The cold still held the city behind her. The work was not done.
