Hades's Arc

Chapter 9 of 10

Hades did not go up empty-handed. He stood in the red light of his hall and lifted his hand, and Hecate's runes rose around him in a slow wheel — orange marks, a star inside a circle, turning in the air. The marks showed him the road he would walk: the frozen fields above, white and silent, with black trees and a sky the color of old iron. He saw the path. He took it. He called his chariot. The sable horses came stamping out of the dark, breath red in the cold. Persephone climbed in beside him, her dark gown bright against the gold rail. He kept his scepter low at his side, the gold wings folded, not raised. He did not want to come as a threat. He wanted to come as her husband, standing in the open. They rose through the gates and broke into the upper world. Where the wheels first touched the frozen ground, the snow melted in two black rings and stayed melted, a quiet mark on the white field. He stepped down. The cold bit through him in a way the underworld never had. He had never stood here as its visible king before. He kept his face still. Demeter was waiting. She stood among dead stalks with her gold torches burning, her crown of small fruits dim in the gray light. She did not move toward them. She did not move away. "I make things grow," she said. "I am not doing that. Not while she is gone from me." Hades set the scepter point-down in the snow. He did not lift it. "She is not gone," he said. "She is here. I am here. Look at us." Persephone stepped forward into the space between them, and Demeter's eyes moved, at last, from Hades to her daughter. The torches did not lower. The fields did not green. But Demeter took one step. One step, across dead ground, toward her child. It was not spring. It was a door, opened a finger's width. Hades had crossed. He had been seen. The rest was still to come.
