Hades's Arc

Chapter 2 of 10

The contract's red light still hummed beneath their feet when Persephone began to weep. She pressed her palms to the warm stone and shook. Hades knelt beside her. Her mother's scream had cut through the dome, and now its echo lived inside her chest. "She will not hear me," Persephone whispered. "She has closed her ears." Hades took her hand. He had built her a pavilion of red glass and black marble. He had planted bright blooms from the world above along its steps. None of it could reach the woman who would not listen. He led her up the long stairs of his dark palace, to the high perch where the messenger owls slept. He gave her parchment and ink. She wrote until her fingers ached. An owl took the letter in its beak and lifted into the gray sky. Hades watched it go. He knew, even then, it would return unread. It did. By dusk the owl came back, the letter still folded, the seal unbroken. Persephone's face went white. She did not cry this time. She only stared, and that was worse. Hades walked her down to the gates. There the great three-headed hound lay across the threshold, its serpent tail curled, its eyes like coals. He drew from his robe a pomegranate, its skin glowing with soft inner light. He split it open. The seeds inside burned like small red lamps. "Each one will hold a sorrow," he said. "Speak into it. Then give it to him to guard. He keeps what cannot leave." Persephone lifted a seed to her lips and whispered. The light inside it dimmed, then steadied. She fed it to the waiting hound. One by one, she gave her grief away. When the last seed was swallowed, she leaned against Hades, quiet at last. She did not smile. But she did not pull away. He held her there at the gate, and knew he had bought her stillness, not her peace.
