Chapter 3

The hound still chewed the last seed when Hades felt the cold press against his gates. It was not Persephone's grief now. It was her mother's, sharpened into a blade and aimed at his door. Frost crept up the black stone. Above, he knew the other gods were gathering, whispering that he must let her go. He climbed to the high steps of his obsidian palace and lifted his scepter. The golden bird on its crown caught the red light. He struck the stone three times. Far below, the long wall of names lit one by one. Every soul he had judged. Every soul still in his care. He would not abandon them. He could not. At the boundary above the gates, he set Hecate's runes turning in the air. The glowing wheel hummed and watched the road from Olympus. If a god came down to demand his wife, he would see them coming. Hermes arrived before any threat. His winged sandals touched the frozen step without a sound. "They are voting," he said. "Up there. The harvest is dead. The mortals are starving. They will ask you to release her by morning." He paused. "A child does not eat a vote, Hades. A child eats bread." Hades did not argue. He drew the signed contract from inside his robe and held it out. The red seal still pulsed, warm and alive. "She signed," he said. "By her own hand. No god can unwrite that. Tell them." Hermes studied the parchment a long moment. Then he nodded once, took it, and lifted into the gray sky. The demand never came. By dusk, Hermes returned empty-handed. The gods had read the seal and gone quiet. Hades stepped down to his chariot and stood beside the black horses, the scepter heavy in his hand. He had kept her. But above, the world was still freezing, and a mother's grief did not care what was signed.
