Chapter 5

Persephone's hand stayed on the seal, but Hades felt the cold press harder. Above the pavilion, frost climbed the black walls of his palace, tracing towers of ice along the obsidian until the red windows dimmed. Ink would not hold her. He needed a root. He walked her to the orchard where the pomegranate tree bent over both worlds. He chose one fruit, heavy and bright, and cut it from the branch himself. "Law brought you here," he said. "This will keep you here." Hermes arrived as the fruit changed in Hades's palm. He looked at the frost on the palace, then at the pomegranate. "Her mother is leaning on your roof like a woman on a locked door," he said. "Whatever you mean to do, do it before the hinges give." Hades held the fruit out to Persephone. "Six seeds," he said. "One for each step you took down to me. Eat, and the Underworld becomes your body, not just your name on a page." Far above, through the cave's frozen ceiling, he felt Demeter's grief press lower — calm, immovable, a mother who would not stop. *I want my daughter back*, that weight said, without words. Persephone broke the fruit. She ate the seeds slowly, one by one, watching him. With each seed, the frost on the palace walls cracked and slid. The red glow returned to the windows. Hermes let out a small breath, like a man setting down a heavy crate. When the last seed was gone, the seal on the contract dimmed — no longer needed. Persephone's feet warmed the stone beneath her. She was rooted now, flesh and fruit. But Hermes met Hades's eyes. "She will feel it," he said. "And she will come herself."
