Persephone's warmth was still in the orchard when the ground above the palace cracked. Hades felt it like a hand on his chest. Demeter had come. He took the empty rind of the fruit and the cut branch, and he walked to the boundary where her cold met his stone. The gates of his realm rose red and black against her white storm. Frost crawled up to the threshold and stopped, as if it had hit a wall it could not name. On the other side stood Demeter, gold against the snow, her twin torches burning steady. She did not knock. She waited. "I want my daughter back," she said. Her voice was flat. "Open the door." Hades stepped through to meet her. He laid the broken pomegranate on the snow between them. Inside the rind, the print of Persephone's hand still glowed faint where she had held the seal — a small red mark, steady as a heartbeat. "She ate," he said. "No one held her mouth. Look." He set the cut branch beside it, still budding from his orchard. "This grew in my house. She chose its fruit." Demeter knelt. She touched the print with one finger. Her torches dimmed. For a long breath she did not move, and Hades saw the mother under the goddess — broken, reading her daughter's hand like a letter she had refused to open. Then she stood. The snow at her feet did not melt. "She chose," Demeter said. "I see it." Her jaw set. "I do not accept it. I make things grow. I am not doing that. Not while she is under stone." She turned and walked back into her white field. The gates held. The proof had been shown and named — and refused. Hades picked up the rind. Above, past his palace roof, he heard the dark water of the river shift, carrying her answer down. She had seen. She would not yield. Now the fight was no longer for proof. It was for the world.
