Chapter 7 of 10

Hades carried the empty rind back through his gates and felt the silence of his own dead. Persephone was bound to him now, but the souls drifting past did not bow, did not look. Her place here was real to him and to her. It was not yet real to them. He set the rind down and began to work. He called Hecate to the open ground outside the hall, where the great dark mosaic spreads under the red sky. He asked for her runes. She lifted her hands, and a wheel of burning marks rose in the air above the stones — a slow-turning herald of orange light. It spoke one name into the quiet, again and again. Persephone. Queen. The souls came. They drifted in from the asphodel, from the river, from the long roads. The three-headed hound padded behind them and pressed them gently forward with his shoulders, not letting them wander off. They gathered on the mosaic in a wide ring, faces turned up to the burning wheel, and they listened. At the edge of the ring Hades uncovered the new stone — a black statue of two figures, himself with his helm at his hip, Persephone with the fruit in her hand, their mouths almost touching. Beneath it, cut deep into the base, her name was carved into the order of his house. Not on paper. Not in a contract. In stone, outdoors, where every soul passing would read it. Persephone stepped from the hall in her dark gown and crown of flowers. The dead saw her. The runes turned above her head. One by one, the souls knelt on the mosaic, a slow wave of bowed shapes spreading out across the red light. The hound lowered his three heads. The silence changed shape. It became recognition. Hades watched her walk among them and knew the thing he had wanted was done. She was queen here, named and seen. But above the palace roof, the cold pressed harder against the stone, and he heard the river carry down the sound of a world beginning to die.
