Chapter 3

The stranger's flinch hung in the air between them. Haven watched his hand move slow to his collar. He pulled something free on a worn cord and held it out under the starlight. A small bone pendant turned in his fingers, smoothed by years of touch. Her name was carved into it in a careful, looping hand. Haven stepped closer over the wet stones. The river hushed beside them, its small waterfall whispering against the rocks. Flowers leaned from the bank as if listening. "Why do you carry my name?" she asked. He shook his head once. "I do not know." His voice was flat, stripped clean. "A witch gave it to me when I was a boy. She said to find the woman whose name matched. She said you would know the answers I seek." Haven's breath caught. "What answers? I do not know you. I do not know where you come from." Behind him, past a stand of trees, she saw it now — a small tent strung with soft lights, a camp made for waiting. He had not come for one night. He had come to stay until she appeared. "My name is Cael Nightshade," he said, closing his fist around the pendant. "And I have been looking for you a long time." Haven did not trust kindness. She did not trust performed need. But this was not kindness. This was a stranger holding her name in bone, asking her for something he could not name. The flinch made sense now — he had spoken her name a thousand times alone, and tonight a real woman had answered. She did not know if he was lying. She only knew he believed it. And that, for now, was enough to make her stay.
