Chapter 4 of 4

The wind shifted first. Haven felt it on the back of her neck before she saw the clouds swallow the stars above the river. A dark, swirling mass rolled in fast, dragging rain in sheets across the water. Lightning cracked white over the trees. Cael's small tent shuddered under the first gust, its soft lights snuffed in seconds. Rain hit them both at once. Cold, hard, soaking through wool and skin. Cael turned to his fire, but the wood was already a black, wet ruin. He stood there a moment, jaw tight, water running down his face. "This will not hold," he said, flat as ever, eyeing the failing canvas. "Follow me," Haven said. The words were out before she could weigh them. He looked at her, wary, rain dripping from his dark hair. She did not explain. She only turned and started up the path she knew by heart. After a breath, she heard his boots behind her in the mud. They half-fell through her cabin door, drenched and shaking. The small fire on the hearth threw warm light over the worn wood floor. Haven shut the door against the storm and pressed her back to it for one steady second. Then she moved. She pulled a clean towel from a shelf and pushed it into his hands. "Dry off. Sit." She set a kettle on the hook and worked from memory — dried pine needles, a small handful of lingonberries, hot water poured slow into a rough ceramic cup. The steam smelled sharp and sweet. She placed it in front of him where he sat by the fire, towel around his shoulders. He lifted the cup, sipped, and went still. "This is good," he said quietly. Then, after a beat, "Why?" Haven looked at him across the small room. The rain hammered her roof. He was a stranger she had let through her door, and she did not have an answer she trusted. "I do not know," she said. And for the first time in a long time, the not-knowing did not feel like a wound. It felt like a door she had chosen to open.
