Chapter 1 of 3

Hazel walked the perimeter at dawn, counting heads out of habit. Thirty-one. Ash trotted beside her, ears up. She needed more for them — more food, more ground, more reasons to keep going. A whistle came from the south gate. A stranger was waiting. The woman stood with her hands open. At her heel sat a tall, scruffy hound with a coat that caught the light like fire. Ash stiffened, then sniffed, then sat. The strange dog touched its nose to his. Hazel let out a breath she hadn't known she was holding. "I know the blocks," the woman said. She unfolded a worn journal across a slab of broken concrete. Inked streets glowed faintly in the morning sun — water caches, safe routes, places where the dead still gathered thick. "I'll trade it. But I stay. Permanent." Hazel called them all to the overgrown park, beneath the cracked stone lion that watched the ruined steps. She laid out the journal. She named the cost. One by one, her people raised their hands. Thirty-one became thirty-two. The old man who lost his daughter did not vote, but he looked at the map a long time, and that was something Hazel had not seen in months.
