Hazel Penelope's Arc

Chapter 2 of 3

Hazel filled a canvas bag with what she could spare from the glowing pharmacy — antibiotics wrapped in foil, fever reducers still sealed in blister packs, half a bottle of children's cough syrup. The neon cross hummed above the doorway as she locked it behind her. The newest member waited outside with her scruffy hound, eyes fixed on the bag. Ash pressed his shoulder against Hazel's leg, steady as always. They moved through the broken blocks in silence. The newest member's dog led them past flooded intersections and toward the edge of their mapped territory. Ash stayed close, his ears flicking at every sound. When the barn came into view, its orange glow cutting through the gray morning, Hazel felt the weight of the bag differently. This wasn't just medicine. It was a choice about who they were becoming. Inside, the girl lay curled on a pile of blankets, her breathing shallow and wet. She looked smaller than seven. The newest member knelt beside her, whispered something soft, then looked up at Hazel with raw gratitude that hurt to hold. Hazel unpacked the bag, measured doses by candlelight, and watched the girl swallow what she was given. Ash sat between them, his presence filling the space where words would have been useless. They carried her back together, the girl's weight distributed between them in a makeshift sling. At the south gate, two of Hazel's people were already clearing space in the shelter closest to the pharmacy. The newest member's voice cracked when she thanked them. Hazel didn't answer. She was counting again — thirty-two heads now, thirty-three with the girl. The math had changed. The sick were no longer someone else's problem, and the medicine she'd been rationing would run out faster. But the old man who lost his daughter was helping set up the cot, and that meant something too.
