Chapter 6

At dusk Hermes came back down to a changed shore. The ferryman stood waiting on the bank, his long painted oar planted in the stones. New marks ran along its shaft in gold — not tally lines for souls, but a ledger. A column of debt. Hermes's name was carved at the top. "Bill's due," the ferryman said. He turned the oar so Hermes could read. The rope still stretched across the black water, snakes coiled patient along it, souls climbing in a slow line toward the bronze and obsidian doors. "Two hundred crossings. No coin on any of them. Pay, or I cut the rope." Hermes had no coin. He had a sack of unanswered seals and a staff he could not give away. He looked at the doors looming over the shore — at the carved arch where the ferryman had begun scratching a second ledger straight into the stone above the threshold. A toll house, growing in real time. "Name a price I can actually pay," Hermes said. The ferryman tapped the oar. "One soul in ten. My pick. Off the rope, into my keeping." Hermes felt the cold of it move through him. One in ten was a tax on the dead — a coin pulled from a mouth that had already paid once. He thought of a fisherman's net that keeps every tenth fish for the harbor master, except these fish had names, and mothers, and last words. He almost said no. Then he looked at the rope, and the line, and the climbing souls, and the hours he had clawed back. He set his staff against the stone. "One in twenty," he said. "And you carve the count where I can see it. No hidden math." The ferryman considered. Then he dragged the oar across the threshold stone and scored a fresh line. "One in twenty. Starting now." The rope stayed up. The snakes held. Hermes climbed back toward Olympus with his route intact and a debt growing behind him in gold — a price he had agreed to, and would have to answer for, soon.
