Chapter 7

Hermes climbed back to the shore the next dusk with the debt already itching at him. One in twenty. He could feel the ferryman waiting to round up, to claim an extra soul here, an extra there. A shopkeeper who shaves the scale, he thought. He needed a ledger of his own — one the old man could not touch. He found a hollow in the cliff above the gates and dragged a flat stone across the mouth. Inside, he scratched a private tally onto the wall with the tip of his staff. Twenty marks for souls. One circle for the ferryman's share. A small, hidden counting house, set just out of sight of the bronze and obsidian arch below. But chalk on rock would not be enough. The ferryman could lie, and a wall could not follow Hermes up the slope. So Hermes unrolled the leather map he carried between realms, the one stitched with red and gold ink. He pressed his palm to it and whispered a binding. Each soul that climbed the rope now lit a tiny red node along the route. The map would count for him, exactly, every crossing. When he came down to the water, the ferryman was already waiting, oar planted, the gold ledger fat with new marks. "Forty owed me today," the old man said. The hat shadowed his eyes. "Round number. Easy math." Hermes lifted the map. Red nodes glowed in a neat chain. "Three hundred and eighty-one crossed," he said. "Your share is nineteen. Not forty. Not twenty." He held the leather flat so the ferryman could see the lights match his own carved tally inside the cliff. "I keep the count now. You take what's yours. Not a soul more." The ferryman stared a long moment. Then he dragged the oar across the threshold and scored nineteen lines, no more. "Clever boy," he said, and it was not a compliment. Hermes climbed back toward Olympus with his route still his, the count locked between stone and map. The debt kept growing. But it would grow honest now — and that, at least, he could carry.
