Chapter 1

For three hundred years, Heron Sable has poled his ferry through black water with a locket clutched shut against his chest. Inside it waits the face of the woman he lost. He knows this the way he knows the river. But the clasp will not open. He has tried knives, fire, and his own long patience. The seal is older than any lock he has learned, and forcing it might burn the memory to ash. Tonight he means to find someone who knows the old seals better than he does. He leaves the ferry tied and walks to a boathouse that leans over the water on rotting stilts. The boards sag under his boots. Moss hangs from the rails like wet hair. Someone told him an old authority on memory-vessels sheltered here. He pushes the warped door. Inside, a woman sits at a table with a ledger open before her. She does not look up. She is young, or wears young like a coat. Her eyes are too wide and gold. Her dress is stitched from the same moth-silk as his own coat. She turns a page and smiles before he speaks. "Maren Ashveil," she says. "I keep books, not names. But I know yours." She taps the ledger. "You carry a sealed thing. You want it open." Heron sets the locket on the table between them. "Can you open it without harming what's inside?" "I can." Her smile widens. "The seal answers to a favor, not a key. That is how the old makers bound their grief. Someone locked this so no force could break it. Only a debt can loosen it." "Name the price," Heron says. Maren slides a page toward him. The paper is blank, but ink crawls across it as he watches, forming a single line he cannot read. "Not coin. A favor, owed to me, unnamed until I call for it. Sign, and the clasp opens tonight." Heron looks at the locket. Three hundred years of silence sit inside it. He thinks of the face he has not seen since the first century of his rowing. His hand shakes once. Then he presses his thumb to the page. The ink drinks a dark bead from his skin. Maren lifts the locket. She breathes on the clasp. The old seal loosens with a small, tired click, like a held breath let go. The lid falls open in her palm. It is empty. No portrait. No lock of hair. Only a scratch on the inner metal, a shape like an antlered head bowed low. "Ah," Maren says softly. She is not surprised. "The memory was moved. It runs on four legs now, in the dark elkhart that crosses your river at moonrise." She closes her ledger. "You'll want to catch it before it forgets you were ever loved. And Heron—your favor is now mine to spend."
