Chapter 2

Heron found Maren at the harbor chapel before dawn. The empty locket still hung cold against his chest. She sat among the crooked headstones, feeding bread to a gull from her palm. Her ledger lay closed beside her. She smiled when his shadow fell across her. "You came fast," she said. Her voice stayed soft, a mouse in a moth-silk dress. "Most men run from what they owe." "You said the elkhart carries what my locket lost," Heron said. "Tell me how to hold my memory before it forgets me. Name your favor. I'll pay it now." Maren tipped her head. The gull flew off. "Now," she repeated. She rose and brushed crumbs from her dress. "You don't ask what I want. You just want it done." Something sharpened in her golden eyes. A swamp drawl crept into her words. "That's rude, ferryman." Heron said nothing. He waited. She pointed past the graves, toward the water. A wrecked ship rested there, its hull swallowed by dark vines. A skull grinned above its door. "A pirate lived on that ship," Maren said. Her polite voice returned. "He died a hundred years ago. I never got to meet him. I've always wanted to." She touched the closed locket at Heron's chest with one finger. "His last memory sits sealed in a spear inside that wreck. Bring it to me. That's my favor. Whole and unopened." Heron crossed the vine-choked planks. The deck groaned. A weapons rack leaned against the mast. Among the rusted blades hung one black spear, its shaft wrapped in living green vine. The leaves stirred though no wind moved. He felt it then, a hum under his palm, like a heartbeat that did not want to be found. He gripped the shaft. The vine tightened around his wrist. He pulled it free anyway and carried it back through the cold. Maren took the spear in both arms. She pressed her cheek to the vine and closed her eyes. For a moment she looked young in truth, not worn like a coat. "Thank you," she breathed. "He's still in here. All of him." "The debt," Heron said. "It's paid." "Paid." She opened her ledger. The blood-line of his contract flickered once, then vanished from the page. "You're free of me." She looked up. "Now I'll keep my word. Your memory runs in the elkhart. But it isn't yours anymore. It has its own legs, its own will. Catch it, and it may know you. Fail, and it will cross your river one last time. After that it forgets you were ever loved." "How do I catch it?" Maren shouldered the spear and walked toward the wreck she loved. "You can't cage a memory that learned to run," she called back. "You have to make it choose to come home. And Heron—it crosses tonight. At moonrise. You have until then." Then she climbed into the dead pirate's ship and left him alone with the ticking sky.
