Chapter 1

Johnathon burned the sauce again. Smoke curled off the pan while his real focus lay on the sketchpad beside the stove. He wanted to be the country's top chef, but half his mind always drifted to charcoal lines and color. His studio held both his lives at once: knives on the counter, drawings taped to the clean white walls, the light wood floor dusted with flour and pencil shavings. He killed the burner and stepped onto the balcony. The black covering kept the rain off. Below, someone had left a small grey cat on the wet ground. It shivered, one white patch bright on its chest, green eyes lifting toward him. He carried the cat upstairs and dried it with a dish towel. That was when he saw her at the shared railing next door, holding a much larger grey cat with golden eyes and white paws. "You found my kitten," she said. "She keeps escaping to find him." She nodded at the big cat in her arms. "That's her father." Her name was LexiBarbie. She lived one balcony over and had never once spoken to him. Johnathon forgot how to hold the towel. "I'm Johnathon," he said. "I cook. And I draw." She looked past him at the sketches on his wall. Her mouth opened. "You drew those?" She set the older cat down and leaned closer to the glass. "I paint. I've stared at your kitchen light for months and wondered who lived here." Johnathon felt his face heat. The kitten climbed his arm and settled on his shoulder. Its father wound around Lexi's ankles, tail flicking, refusing to leave the boy who smelled like burnt sauce and graphite. They talked until the rain thinned. She told him she mixed her own colors from scraps. He told her he plated food like a canvas, that judges never understood why a chef cared so much about a single line of sauce. Lexi understood. She said it plainly, without pity. "Most people pick one thing," she said. "You don't have to." No one had ever told him that. He had spent years hiding the sketchpad when other cooks walked in. When she finally scooped up the big grey cat to go, she paused at the rail. "Keep the kitten a while," she said. "She clearly chose you. And I want to see what you cook when nobody's grading it." Johnathon watched her door close. His heart hammered in a way no competition ever caused. He turned back to his ruined sauce, the sketchpad, the kitten now asleep on his stool. For the first time, his two lives did not feel like a problem to solve. They felt like something to share. Then he remembered: the national qualifier was in three days, and he had told the judges he would cook alone.
