Chapter 10

The day of the final arrived. Johnathon walked into the studio with Lexi beside him. The set was built for television. Bright lights hung on metal rails. The counters gleamed. Cameras faced the row of stations. He had drawn his dish a hundred times. He knew every step. His hands were steady for the first time in days. "You've got this," Lexi said. She squeezed his arm, then stepped back to the rail. "Cook it. Then read the page. That's all I'm saying right now." A staff member led him to his station. The clock started. Johnathon laid out his ingredients and breathed. His dish told his whole life. A base of his father's stuffed chicken, cut small. A ribbon of lemon sauce, for Lexi. A charcoal-black smear across the plate, like the sketches he loved. Food and drawing, together, the way she once told him he never had to choose. He worked fast and clean. The chicken browned. The sauce came together bright and sharp. He plated it like a canvas, each part placed by hand. Then he reached for the last element, a thin crisp he had practiced for hours. It broke. The crisp snapped in two on the plate. Twelve minutes left. His stomach dropped. He looked up. Lexi met his eyes at the rail. She did not speak. She just tapped her chest, twice, over her heart. The same thing she did when she wanted him to slow down. Johnathon set the broken crisp aside. He did not have time to make another. So he changed the plan. He took the two broken pieces and stood them upright in the sauce, like the pages of an open book. It looked like the notebook on his shelf. It looked like something waiting to be read. The clock hit zero. He carried the plate to the judges. They studied it in silence. One judge tasted the chicken and closed her eyes. Another dragged a fork through the black smear and the lemon. "This is a person," the first judge said. "Not a recipe. A person." They scored him. When the numbers came up, Johnathon did not fully understand them at first. Then Lexi's hands flew to her mouth. He had placed first in the round. He was through to the last stage of the national final. He wanted to run to her. But a producer caught his arm. "You advance," the man said. "One dish left. Tomorrow. Live. And the theme is chosen by the judges, not you." He held out a sealed card. Johnathon opened it. Two words were printed inside. Cook for the one who saved you. He looked at Lexi. His hand went to his pocket, where he had slipped her notebook that morning, still unread. He had earned the right to open it. But not yet. First he had one more dish to cook, and now the whole country would know exactly who it was for.
